Mi’kma’ki is the ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq, or L’nu’k – The People.
The region includes what today is known as Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, most of New Brunswick and parts of the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec.
Mi’kma’ki was divided into seven districts, with names based on the geographical characteristics of the areas. The Mi’kmaq have been here for at least 13,500 years and for generations learned about their culture through stories and legends passed down through oral histories.
